Professor Karen Ramsey has been promoted as our new Regional Program Director of Medical Billing and Coding Program.
Karen Ramsey has lived in Volusia County all her life and raised 4 daughters who all work in the Medical field. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Health Service Management and working on her Masters in Health Services
Karen Ramsey was the Coordinator at Florida Hospital Deland where she was responsible for several departments for over 9 years. She also helped write the training manual for their software change from Meditech to Cerner. She oversaw the training of all departments from Clinical to Administrative.
Her career then took her to running a coding department for a Hematologist/Oncologist group here in Deland. It was then that Karen Ramsey found her true love of education and teaching. Her desire to help others learn and see their dreams come true became her true passion.
Karen Ramsey then began teaching with Florida Technical College in 2011 where she began teaching in the Medical Assistant Program & Phlebotomy Program. Professor Ramsey holds certifications in these areas such as NCMA (National Certified Medical Assistant), CPT (Certified Phlebotomist Technician), Certified ECG Technician and IV Therapy. A few years later she became the Lead over the Medical Billing & Coding Program in Deland. Her love of the Medical Billing & Coding Program and wanting what was best for her students is what lead her to get involved with the AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders). She has served as the President of the AAPC – Daytona Beach Chapter for two years (2015-2016) and Vice-President for 2017. She then was able to see it come full circle and her Medical Billing and Coding students at Florida Technical College ran for office with the AAPC Daytona Beach Chapter.
Her continued education in this field shows her dedication to stay on top of the industries demands for her students. It is relevant by the certifications she holds. Professor Ramsey currently holds certifications with the AAPC as a CPC (Certified Professional Coder), CPC-I (Certified Professional Coder – Instructor), CIRCC (Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder). She is also certified with AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) in ICD10CM & PCS.
