Kissimmee, FL – Just ahead of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, Kissimmee Police Department’s Lieutenant Omar Berrio received a life-changing surprise: the NUC University Reach Higher Scholarship. This full-ride scholarship will allow Lt. Berrio to pursue a master’s degree through NUC University’s Online Division, bringing him one step closer to fulfilling his lifelong ambition of becoming a Police Captain.
Kissimmee Police Chief Betty Holland, and fellow officers gathered to celebrate this life-changing announcement, which was made by Dr. James Michael Burkett, President of NUC University Florida Technical College.
Lt. Berrio’s journey with NUC University began in 2018 when he was awarded the Sergeant Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter Memorial Scholarship, allowing him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at Florida Technical College.
His continued dedication earned him a promotion to Lieutenant in 2020.
This scholarship, presented as part of NUC University’s Reach Higher Scholarship program, underscores the institution’s commitment to empowering Hispanic leaders and fostering their pursuit of excellence.
Alejandra Escobar, a prominent local entrepreneur and newly appointed Vice President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando, was also awarded a full-ride scholarship through the same program.
