Staying Focused, Motivated and Geared for College Success

No matter where you choose to go to school, focus and motivation are necessary for ensuring your success. It doesn’t matter whether you are going to a four-year university or a tech school, the need is the same. In fact, attending a tech school in Orlando may demand greater focus than a university in Omaha.

Disney World is not a tech school in Orlando.

Beware of Dog!

Attending any school in Orlando may feel like a Disney vacation. If it does, you probably already have a focus problem. It’s not uncommon. There are so many attractions they can easily become distractions, if you let them. It’s not just Disney. A weekend on the beach at Daytona may be fun, but it’s not going to help you pass that exam on Monday. Which leads to the first rule of staying focused.

Keep Your Eyes on the Prize.

Graduation is your goal. Your certificate, diploma or degree is the prize. That prize may appear to be nothing more than a piece of paper. In reality, it is the key that you will need to open several doors following school. If you take your eyes off the prize, your motivation will disappear and you won’t even know where it went.

Have a Plan.

plan for success

Plan to Succeed.

An effective plan should include well-defined objectives that must be achieved in order to reach your goal. Break your objectives down into the smallest reasonable milestones and associate each with some kind of timeframe. An objective may be, “I will successfully complete Drafting 101 in the first semester.” That could be broken down to include, “I will set aside x hours each day (set the precise hours) to study.”

Stick to your plan. Your plan is preeminent. Determine to let nothing interrupt your plan. Arrange your life around your plan. Do not attempt to arrange your plan around your life. You will not be able to focus.

Eliminate Distractions.

focus

Hear no evil distractions.

Get rid of distractions in class and outside of class. Learn to live without your mobile device, at least during class and in the times you have bracketed for study. Take the earbuds out. Turn off the TV. They are not part of your plan.

Stay Healthy.

A recent Harvard study revealed that the top reasons for dropping out of school include

  • Not being prepared for the rigors of academic work
  • Inability to cope with the competing demands of study and outside activities

Based on this information alone, be prepared mentally. Know that being focused requires effort. Eat right. Exercise. Get enough rest.

Richard G. Scott said,

We become what we want to be by consistently being what we want to become each day.

You will want to be focused and motivated to succeed after school. Now is the time to start being what you want to be.
